13.3-inch MacBook white
The polycarbonate unibody MacBook with its large multi-touch
glass trackpad and excellent battery life is a winner. By Akhtar Pasha
Apple's
latest MacBook has many of the features from its MacBook Pro line including
the LED-backlit display, large glass multi-touch trackpad (use two fingers to
right click, pinch or zoom, three to flick, four to scroll) and robust performance
and unlike the Pros, it is priced at Rs 56,900 (MRP). While thats 10%
higher than products with a comparable configuration from other brands, a Mac
is a Mac and with its stunning design and excellent build quality, those buyers
who prefer Macs will not hesitate to pay the premium.
The new MacBook has a snow white polycarbonate unibody. It runs much cooler
than the MacBook Pro. Turn to the base of the notebook and you'll notice an
integrated battery. You will need to unscrew the base to gain access to the
battery, memory (which can be added up to 8 GB) and hard drive. An integrated
battery means that you cannot change the battery yourself. The battery is meant
to last 1,000 recharge cycles but when it does need replacing, you'll need to
return to the Apple Store or to an authorized repair center.
Our battery torture test, with brightness set to 100% and Wi-Fi on, saw the
laptop play a DVD for over four hours. That's equivalent to 6-7 hours of moderately
heavy usage, which is almost equal to the MacBook Pro.
It features a full size backlit chiclet keyboard. The 13.3-inch (diagonal) widescreen
is glossy with 1280 x 800 resolution. As far as compute horsepower goes, we
were impressed with the performance. It zipped through any task that we threw
at it with gusto. Another point worth mentioning here is that MacBook White
boots faster (31 seconds) and shuts down in 3 seconds, which is quite impressive.
It weighs 2.13 kilograms. Sound quality was a letdown.
The snow white body looks nice but dirt shows up quickly.
The other features are standard as seen in 13-inch units such as a power connector,
Ethernet port, new edition FireWire 800 port, mini display port, 2 USB ports
and an audio port. There is no mini SD card reader which is a pity as it is
easier to copy files to and from a phone using an in-built mini SD card reader.

| Pros |
- Large multi-touch trackpad
- Snappy performer with loads of power under
the hood
- For a Core 2 Duo machine, the battery
backup time is excellent (6-7 hours of moderate load)
- The polycarbonate body absorbed all the
heat and it remained cool after prolonged usage
|
| Cons |
- It does not sport a mini SD card reader
which is available on most laptops today
- The sound quality could be better
- Dust shows up on the snow white body which
would need frequent cleaning
