Servers

Multi-core x86 and entry-level UNIX

x86 servers with multi-core processors and multiple form factors offers the best price-performance and performance per watt, while UNIX machines are best suited for heavy transaction environments and vital applications

SMBs have a choice of servers powered by dual-core, quad-core and six core CPUs from Intel and AMD in various form factors. Rack and blade servers offers higher performance per watt in the x86 space. These aggressively priced products are a commodity with entry-level Xeon/Opteron servers starting at a price tag of Rs 25,000.

On the server OS front, SMBs can choose from Windows, Linux and UNIX (AIX, HP UX and Solaris).

While the growth of blade servers is higher than that of rack and tower servers, blade servers still come at a higher price point. However, if you have hundred of servers running in your data center, blade servers can reduce TCO significantly thanks to virtualization that can help you save on power and cooling costs.

While buying servers, SMBs need to factor in a couple of points such as the business applications that they want to run, capacity required and map the same with their business growth and future expansion plans. For example if an SMB has high transaction volumes running ERP and is expanding fast, it would need a 2p rack server. This would give it the performance and high scalability for growth to add applications that it wants to run in the future.

Standalone applications can run on 1p tower servers as these have better price-performance. For demanding environments running multiple instances of applications that require higher I/O performance, reliability and scalability, SMBs can choose 4p or 8p x86 rack servers or go in for UNIX servers.

Further, SMBs should consider 4p rack servers for physical server consolidation as these reduce the server footprint, simplify management, reduce licensing costs and save on power and cooling to boot.
