Left to Right: Rajiv Chandrashekhar - Senior Buyer, Croma; Benson Lin - Corporate VP India, Asus; Narendra Bhandari – APAC Director for Software & Services Group, Intel along with two young models launching the Asus Eee Box

Asus in association with Intel announced the launch of the Eee Box in India. The company claims that this is the world’s greenest, quietest and the most cost-effective desktop PC as it consumes 90% less power than a conventional machine and its sound emission is a low 26 decibels. This product is targeted at Small and Medium Businesses (SMBs) and Home users in India. Asus aims to sell 15,000 Eee Box PCs in India by the end of the fourth quarter of 2008.

Benson Lin, Corporate Vice President, Asus, said, “With the ever increasing concern over global warming and the looming threat to the environment, Asus has taken multiple initiatives in manufacturing green, eco-friendly products. These initiatives are part of our social and environmental responsibilities as well as part of Asus’ strategic goal to tap the potential that ‘Green Industry’ has in future. We have made substantial investment in the R&D for green technology and will roll out products manufactured from environment-friendly materials, consuming much less power and conforming to stringent RoHS and WEEE standards.”

“The Eee Box will help boost the sales in the overall desktop market in India because of the advantages that it provides in terms of size and power saving,” said Stanley Wu, Product Manager – Notebooks and Eee PC, Asus (India).

Gopal Swaminathan, General Manager, OEM Business, Intel South Asia revealed that the Eee Box uses the Intel Atom N270 (1.6 GHz) processor, based on an entirely new architecture designed from the ground up specifically for low power and performance in an ultra-small package. The Intel Atom processor packs more than 47 million transistors into a single piece of silicon measuring less than 25 mm², and has a thermal design power specification in the 0.6-2.5 watt range. He added, “This is our smallest processor built with the world’s smallest transistors and a fundamental shift in design, small yet powerful enough to enable a big Internet experience on devices such as the Eee Box.”

According to Swaminathan, Intel Atom based designs are used for content consumption (simple browsing, listening to music etc) PCs like netbooks and nettops and for advanced computing (editing, video conferencing etc) Intel Centrino processors are used.
