Enterprise-wide applications

The next step is EWA

Learn from others' mistakes. Before buying an ERP solution ask for references

SMBs already have the basic infrastructure in place when it comes to their IT set-ups. It’s now time to pilot and roll out enterprise wide applications or EWA. ERP is the most popular of these and lots of SMBs have already deployed these systems. When it comes to ERP the market is dominated by SAP with Oracle, Microsoft, Ramco among the other players.

While deploying EWA, most IT managers prefer to get references of other companies in their industry vertical that have deployed the same software. A EWA rollout can take several months and for an SMB it is advisable to start small with a few core modules and then add to it rather than go in for a big-bang approach.

On the whole it is better to stick to off-the- shelf software rather than try to build your own as maintaining home-grown systems can be troublesome especially if the person who developed the system in the first place leaves the organization at a later date.

While applications like CRM and BI may seem overwhelming and unnecessary to a small business with a handful of branches, they can be useful for a mid-sized business that has to compete with its peers for the business of larger companies or even end-users.

EWA can be categorized into front office (customer-facing) applications such as CRM, and back office applications like ERP and SCM. In front office EWA, the application is used to automate or streamline communication between customers and the organization. Back office EWA systems are used to automate backend processes such as material requisitions, billing, distribution and reporting.

ERP is a forerunner among EWAs, and has contributed significantly to the popularity of these applications. Although ERP systems were initially developed for manufacturing, they are available today for almost every industry vertical. Mid-sized businesses from the manufacturing segment are the big spenders on ERP in the country.

The prime reason for small businesses not implementing ERP systems is because most of them are family-run businesses. But now the small businesses are moving from accounting solutions to ERP systems as there are benefits to be gained by these organizations over home-grown solutions or manual processes.

The CRM market in the SMB segment has matured, and smaller companies can now take advantage of the same CRM functionality that larger competitors enjoy. Vendors, driven by more competition and consolidation, now package and price this functionality for the specific requirements of SMBs.
