A leader in BPM and ECM

Newgen Software offers end-to-end enterprise solutions through its BPM and ECM suite of products. By Nivedan Prakash

Newgen Software is a leading player in the Business Process Management (BPM) and Enterprise Content Management (ECM) space, and is known for software product portfolio that power solutions for compliance management, production-grade scanning and automatic data extraction across industry verticals.

“With the dream of ‘One World, One Workplace’, a vision of developing innovative products, and the intent of bringing a revolution in the document management and business process management business, we introduced innovative products in this space. Newgen was established to realize the founders’ vision of establishing an Indian company having unique products and being recognized as a leader in BPM and DMS space,” said Punit Jain, Senior Vice-president, Sales, Newgen Software.

The foundation

"From its incorporation, Newgen chose to be a company with a difference, selling products at a time when other Indian IT majors were focusing upon selling IT services"

Founded by Diwakar Nigam and T S Varadarajan, Newgen commenced operations in 1992 with a commitment towards offering the best possible products and solutions in terms of quality, and to fulfill customer demand by exceeding requirements. The company, which has a global footprint with an installed base of over 700 customers in 30 countries, is the market leader in India, and it has a strong presence in APAC and EMEA, and intends to expand in the US and Western Europe as well.

During the start-up phase, the company encountered lack of awareness about its products in the Indian market. It, meanwhile, not only spread the cause but also spelt out what its products and services meant. Internationally too, the company initially faced hurdles, as it met fierce competition from large competitors having an established presence in the market. However, Newgen’s consistent focus on offering high quality products and services that went beyond implementation, at acceptable price points to multinational corporations in developing markets, and replicating these successes in developed markets helped it overcome these challenges and made it a partner of choice for leading companies worldwide.

“From its incorporation, Newgen chose to be a company with a difference, selling products at a time when other Indian IT majors were focusing upon selling IT services,” commented Jain.

With an employee strength of about 1,200, Newgen’s revenues for 2006-07 stand at around Rs 65 crores, maintaining over 36% growth. The company has four research and development centers—three in New Delhi and one in Chennai, consisting of over 300 members who enhance its product range and add to its existing portfolio.

Newgen has a large base of clients, both national and international. “Nearly 40 of our clients are Fortune Global 500 companies. In India, we have implemented our solutions for some of the most admired names across industries such as Bank of Baroda, ING Vysya, Max New York Life Insurance, Ranbaxy, ICICI Prudential, EXL Services, Patni BPO, Wipro BPO, IBM Daksh, Airtel, Hutch, Reliance, amongst others,” added Jain.

It has around 14 years of experience in providing Outsourced Product Development (OPD) and Software Engineering Services (SES). The company’s long-term customers include Japanese and American imaging giants.

It was also involved in the process automation and enablement of centralized operations for a global banking behemoth. Newgen points with pride to projects that it has executed for Max New York Life, Sahara Life Insurance, Unilever Indigo, and Ranbaxy.

An employee-centric organization

Newgen employs the best of talent from top engineering and management institutes in India for its various teams—sales and marketing, product and project development/ implementation/support, R&D, and quality control.

“The work environment is professional and informal at the same time. Everyone contributes effectively towards timely and successful completion of projects. Seniors are approachable and always forthcoming with help. There are no strict dress codes and employees are always dressed as per decorum and the occasion. Whether it’s for birthdays, welcomes or farewells, celebrations are a regular feature at Newgen,” added Jain.

The company believes that caring about its employees’ needs goes a long way in establishing a strong relationship with them. Towards this goal, it has established the Newgen Employee Welfare Association (NEWS), wherein the company undertakes various activities such as organizing NEWS week—the annual fest at Newgen where an employee’s extra curricular skills come to the fore; various sporting events and tournaments for cricket, football, chess, badminton, and table tennis; blood donation and health check up camps. Recreational facilities are provided to employees to unwind in their leisure time.

As an organization, Newgen believes that unless there are ample growth opportunities for employees, an organization cannot flourish. Right from providing opportunities to working in a challenging and stimulating environment, client handling at an early stage with seniors and mentors to guide them through, undertaking specialized courses, taking a break to accomplish higher studies, to changing their roles based on their priorities, Newgen provides a dynamic environment where employees are continuously encouraged to challenge boundaries and beliefs.

Newgen’s vision

As part of its growth plans, Newgen is looking for geographical expansion, wherein it would increase penetration into existing markets, including EMEA and APAC. It would also enhance its focus on North America, Japan, and Europe. It would also focus on large, multi-national BPO and BFSI accounts, and on building its sales team.

Under the channel strategies, the company is planning to expand relationships with existing partners such as HP and SAP to target international opportunities. It would also enable country specific system integrators to sell, implement and support local customers better. As far as revenue maximization is concerned, Newgen is focusing on up-selling processes to all new and existing customers, and on cross-selling additional Newgen products to existing customers.

Newgen is also concentrating on product development. These products include payment system products, compliance and operational risk management, e-mail archival and life cycle management, invoice processing, and output management.
