Simplify and accelerate

Nicholas Tang, Managing Director, Asia, Progress Software and Larry DiLoreto, Vice President Asia Pacific & Japan, Progress Software talk to Express Computer about the company’s plans for India and their take on the Indian business scenario.

Plans for India

Nicholas Tang

Larry DiLoreto

Nicholas Tang: The business opportunity for us here India is very high. Today, organizations need to address challenges of business integration. The methods to approach such challenges are many. Some of the approaches that are gaining popularity are Service Oriented Architecture and Enterprise Service Bus. This is where we come into the picture. The principal objective of our application infrastructure software is to simplify and accelerate the development, deployment, integration and management of business applications. Users of information technology today demand software applications that are comprehensive, reliable, responsive and cost-effective. Our goal is to maximize the benefits of information technology while minimizing its complexity and total cost of ownership. Today over 60,000 organizations use Progress Technology and partner applications and services in over 140 countries.

The Indian business ecosystem

Nicholas Tang: Ever since the Indian economy has opening up, India holds tremendous promise as a critical global business destination for technology companies with a global footprint. There are a number of reasons for this. India is a rapidly growing market and is today the most important destination for outsourcing. Companies are investing in a very significant manner in India and we at Progress Software are no different.

We are very confident of the potential for us in the domestic market. India is one of the two emerging economies in the world. We want to make sure we come closer to software system integrators in India that are playing critical roles worldwide and not just in India. We are a 25 year old company, headquartered in Bedford, MA. We have been selling in India for a long time now either directly or through our application partners.

Presence in India

Nicholas Tang: We have opened an India development centre in Hyderabad. We have development centers across the world at locations including Cambridge UK and Belgium. The company is divided into four divisions, Open Edge, Sonic Software, Data Direct and Real Time and all four are represented at our India Development Centre, which plays a vital role in our development activities at a global level. We further strengthened our presence in the country with the establishment of our own office in India in 2005. Today some of the company’s most critical development work is undertaken in India.

Larry DiLoreto: We sell directly. We also place a major thrust on the channel route. Over 2,000 ISVs worldwide embed our technology into their products. In India, we partner with as many as 50 system integrators.
