Symantec introduces Endpoint Protection
Symantec announced a significant step in its Security 2.0 vision with the introduction
of Symantec Endpoint Protection and Symantec Network Access Control, which was
previously codenamed Hamlet. The company claims this to be the most significant
update to its enterprise antivirus products in years. It combines anti-virus
with advanced threat prevention in a single agent delivering better defence
against malware for laptops, desktops and servers. Endpoint Protection is currently
available to the public in beta form.
Symantec Endpoint Protection includes proactive technologies that automatically
analyse application behaviours and network communications to detect and actively
block attacks. Customers are provided with anti-virus, antispyware, firewall,
host and network based intrusion prevention solutions (IPS) and application
and device control integrated into a single solution that is easy to install
and easy to manage.
According to Tom Kendra, Group President, Security and Data Management, Symantec,
Symantec Endpoint Protection makes it easier for businesses to adopt a
more effective multi-layered security solution and extends the power of anti-virus
to address todays evolving threat landscape. He claims that it resets
the bar for endpoint security, reducing overhead, time and costs so that customers
can efficiently manage security and gain confidence that corporate assets are
protected.
The product was designed from the ground up to ensure an
integrated experience for customers, resulting in broader and stronger endpoint
protection. The solution is designed to be more resource-friendly, reducing
the memory footprint by more than 80 percent. It blends signature-based anti-virus
with new proactive threat detection technology to protect from both traditional
and emerging threats.
With a widening group of users tapping into corporate resources, the need to
secure endpoints and ensure compliance with security policies can no longer
be separated. The solution comes NAC-enabled out of the box. By integrating
NAC and security into a single endpoint agent, Symantec enables customers to
more easily deploy Symantec Network Access Control and provides operational
efficiencies such as single software and policy updates, unified reporting and
unified licensing and maintenance.
