NXP and SRV go cordless

A recent study showed that the Indian electronics equipment production will grow at 50 percent y-o-y till 2010. NXP Semiconductors, formerly known as Philips Semiconductors wants to be part of this. The company has collaborated with SRV Telecom to design, develop and manufacture Digitally Enhanced Cordless Telephones (DECT) in India.

Speaking on this venture E K Surendran, Managing Director, SRV Telecom says, “We are optimistic about the development and manufacturing of DECT phones in India. We believe these phones will offer superior sound quality and usability for fixed line telephone connections.”

The design team was handpicked by SRV. Apart from this SRV plans to set up a manufacturing centre in Bangalore. The company expects this facility to be functional by end 2007 and is expected to churn out an average of 2,000,000 phones every year. The company is also keen on exporting phones once the production facility is well established.

NXP will provide its three-chip DECT chipsets, including a RF amplifier (RF-PA), a transceiver (TX-RX) and a baseband IC designed on an ARM7 core. SRV Telecom will design, manufacture and market the phones in India.

Rajeev Mehtani

Rajeev Mehtani, VP and Managing Director, NXP Semiconductors in India explains his company’s role in the venture. He says, “NXP is happy to offer application technology for home and office use in India. By participating in such initiatives, we intend to contribute to the local design and manufacturing ecosystem in the telecommunications industry.”

NXP will enable operators to provide more than 40 million fixed line subscribers in India with a better handset. He further states that, “NXP Semiconductors’ DECT phone chipsets offer a combination of voice quality and low power consumption along with mobility, suitable for both home and office environment.”
