Digital Infrastructure Forum

ASUSTek Computer Inc and Exfinity launched an interactive forum called Digital Infrastructure Forum (DIF) to address infrastructure challenges in the digital content creation arena. Intense international competition, the development and deployment of new technologies, the challenges faced in providing converged services and knowing the details about a customer’s preferences are a few crucial issues faced by the digital content creation sector. Each forum will be looking to provide high efficiency solutions that facilitate content creation.

The inaugural event of the series was on enhancing post-production returns. In this recently concluded event the focus was on creating high efficiency infrastructure for post-production. Andrew Tsui, Managing Director, AsusIndia and Parvez Diwan, Founder, Exfinity presented a relevant solution and a road map for increasing returns during post-production.

Organisations have limited budgets. Even with such strict budgets, production houses are investing in the latest technologies and are looking for an end-to-end digital infrastructure to simplify the production cycle. Diwan shared his thoughts on how to reduce these costs. He listed five solutions through which production houses can succeed with their existing budgets.

The first one was to empower the content creator. He emphasised on getting tools to suit the object being created. He then spoke about creation of render farms . The business case for a render farm is to offload rendering to a system that is not being used by an animator. He then went on to speak about networking, and the importance of thermal and power management.

Explaining the need for effectively optimising computers and networks, Diwan said, “Using existing infrastructure and creating a collaborative environment completely eliminates the need for sequential data transfer among different workstations and saves a substantial amount of time and effort.” He added that cost-effective use of Hybrid SAN and NAS solutions with high performance computers empowers studios to work on large projects in an efficient manner.

Andrew Tsui, Managing Director, Asus India, gave his views on how Asus could improve digital infrastructure by providing adequate components suitable for post-production. “The Indian media & entertainment industry is undergoing a major shift due to which new opportunities are created for the post production segment Asus aims to offer a product portfolio that caters to this requirement. Having had the experience of working with this segment internationally, we would now like to use this platform to share ideas and experience of maximising productivity of the Indian digital infrastructure scenario,” said, Tsui.

According to FICCI, Indian animation stands at $260 million and it is projected to be $1 billion industry by 2009. With this kind of growth projected, there is surely an urgent need to look into the issues faced by this industry and such forums will help industries in this sector immensely to find solution to their problems. DIF is expecting to be a regular event.
