his journey from being a CIO to becoming a CEO.

In a fascinating presentation that reflects the changing role
of the CIO, Satish Naralkar, CEO and MD, NSE.IT, described the route from CIO
to CEO in just two words: Shut up. Addressing his fellow CIOs, he
urged them to change the way they talk. Talk business language, talk about
your customers rather than data centres, talk about innovations to become more
productive and competitive, talk to your peers and seniors about the business,
read Fortune as well as computer magazines.
Currently, we see the CIOs responsibilities as anticipating, organising,
strategising, delivering and measuring. In the current changing environment,
there are more real opportunities, like the CIO as a strategist, collaborator,
or governor. The role of the CIO is shifting from a technologist to business
liaison.
According to Naralkar, a CIOs job is to set vision and direction for the
enterprise, identify business models and opportunities, think strategically,
plan for the future, and be a part of the organisations mergers and acquisitions.
The CEO-CIO relationship goes like this: a CEO seizes opportunities to redefine
business, and a CIO creates an infrastructure to support business ventures.
A CEO develops new opportunities while the CIO understands vision and transforms
it into a technology strategy.

Today, 40 percent of CIOs report to CEOs, and this will grow to 60 percent,
forecasts Naralkar. CIOs are now aiming for the CEOs position.
He concluded by talking about his own transition from CIO
to CEO. In my journey to become a CEO, I moved from being CIO at NSE to
both CIO and CEO at NSE.IT. It was a tough act, balancing the delivery to NSE
and non-NSE clients. I was juggling between the cultural change, top-line vs
bottom-line, and domestic vs global. This created a difficult situation for
me, and in a way the CIOs career was over. I became the CEO of NSE.IT,
which came into being in October 2006 when NSE split into NSE and NSE.IT.
