Accelerating application delivery

Citrix Systems' annual event, iForum 06, was held in Orlando, United States. By Abhinav Singh

Citrix’s annual event, iForum 2006, showcased the latest developments regarding accelerating application delivery. About 3,000 delegates attended this three-day conference that was dominated by extensive sessions, workshops, exhibits and networking opportunities aimed at creating an awareness among organisations as to how they can deliver any application—client / server, desktop or Web—faster with the quality of performance users demand, in a secure environment.

During his inaugural address, Mark B Templeton, President and CEO, Citrix Systems Inc emphasised the fact that application delivery technologies make it possible for the workforce in an organisation to work from anywhere in the world.

Templeton said that the acquisition of Reflectent Software has helped Citrix capitalise on the former’s real-time application monitoring technology and buying Orbital Data has helped it offer products to optimise application delivery to users in branch offices.

He added that the earlier acquisition of NetScaler had paid off for Citrix as it had helped the company in offering products for optimised Web application delivery. He cited the case of Boeing—the company’s employees collaborate across 70 locations. It has successfully virtualised its PLM applications for faster application delivery.

Citrix along with IBM unveiled plans for a new offering dubbed Project Kent—an end-to-end turnkey solution that provides dispersed workers in an organisation the ability to connect to applications, data and people during a disruptive event. The new solution will be offered as an integral part of IBM’s Virtual Workplace Continuity service product and integrates emergency notifications, employee updates, access to applications and communications and collaboration within a single solution. Citrix’s solution will use USB keys to ease access in a disruptive situation.

The company also announced its new ‘Dynamic Desktop’ initiative through which it and its partners will bring personalisation and flexibility to desktops to support a number of tasks performed by office workers.

Wes Wasson, corporate Vice-president, Product and Market Strategy, Citrix Systems Inc, during his presentation on ‘Improve Application Delivery to Your Branch Offices,’ commented on the Citrix’s strategic partnership with Microsoft which will result in a single integrated ‘Branch Office Appliance’ combining Citrix WANScaler with Microsoft branch services.

During the conference, a Customer Innovation Award was presented to Betfair an online gambling exchange that has succeeded through faster performance and always-on availability.
