India's best Enterprise Var

This category witnessed an average growth of 25 percent, keeping pace with its peers in the Advance Market, a sign that economic growth is secular and is percolating down to the emerging markets.

Growth drivers

Education, services, manufacturing, government, IT and BPO have been major growth drivers in the Emerging Markets as well. However, they vary in magnitude from region to region.

Nortech Infotech, the winner from the southern region, benefited from growth in BPO segment and clinched several multi-crore deals from IT and BPO companies. Pune-based Concept Informatics derived its growth from the defence and R&D segments. Secant leveraged on opportunities in the manufacturing sector in Ludhiana.

In the east, IT consumption is clearly being driven by the government, be it Graphic Trades that bagged a project from the Bihar government to computerise its education department, or Sigma Computers that won projects from the government for high-end document management and GIS solutions.

On the application front, ERP seems to be dominating SMB IT spends. Whether it is Veetrag in Sangli or E-Caps in Coimbatore, they rode the ERP deployment boom.

Another technology growth area turned out to be wireless and IP solutions. Manufacturing units deployed wireless connectivity, in some cases with audio and video interfaces.

Business innovations

There is no doubt that enterprise VARs are on par with their peers in Advance Market when it comes to the adoption of best business practices. Nortech Infotech has invested Rs 12 lakh in ERP. Sparx Technologies has Exchange 2003 deployed for workflow and mailing solutions, and the SharePoint Portal Server for its intranet portal and deployment of small applications such as call logging and employee self-service. Companies like Secant, Sigma and E-Caps either have an ERP system in place or are planning to implement one soon. Several of these companies have taken the initiative to make themselves responsive to customer needs. Graphic undertook restructuring of its customer service cell to reduce turnaround time. Concept has set up an automated SLA management system with online complaint logging for customers. Veetrag is readying itself for an ISO certification.

Opportunities and challenges

This year the agenda is to build technical and service capabilities in high-growth areas like storage, network management, managed services, security and IT outsourcing. Plans are afoot to expand to other parts of the country. Concept plans to create a multi-location presence, as do E-caps and Nortech. So don’t be surprised if, next year, some of these companies figure in the Advance Market category.

Infonet Solutions, Chennai

Infonet widened its customer base by increasing its sales strength. It added HP's data storage and backup solutions in the last fiscal; this contributed Rs 1.8 crore to its turnover.

Liberty Automation Systems, Mumbai

In FY 05-06, Liberty Automation Systems recorded a turnover of Rs 18.21 crore, a YoY increase of 25 percent. Of this, nearly Rs 17 crore was contributed by institutional sales and the rest came from re-distribution and consumer sales.

Graphic Trades, Patna

Ajay Maitin

The company recorded a turnover of Rs 12.5 crore in 2005-06, a jump of nearly 40 percent over the previous fiscal. This was driven by several large projects awarded by state governments and PSUs. The company bagged an order of Rs 1.6 crore from Bihar Education Projects covering districts whereby 700 PCs were installed along with software and printers.

Graphic Trades bagged another order of Rs 1 crore from two schools under the Ministry of Defence; it involved computerisation, implementation of VSAT, connectivity and servers. 150 PCs and four servers were installed in the schools. It also won an order of Rs 47 lakh from NTPC, where 300 PCs and a Sun server were deployed.

It signed on with Epson for projectors, and as a result bagged a contract for 40 units valued at Rs 60 lakh. It also partnered with HP for its server and storage products. The company estimates that the tie-up with HP contributed nearly Rs 70 lakh to its turnover. Graphic Trades also ventured into providing HP’s plotters and digital press solution, and signed with a software company for providing rural banking solutions, which the company believes will help it capture Rs 7 crore in revenues over the next couple of years.

Last year Graphic undertook an initiative to restructure its support infrastructure as it realised that the existing set-up was inefficient. Repeat calls were higher, and so was the turnaround time. With the new set-up in place, the company has managed to reduce response time to four hours (city limits) and 24 hours (upcountry) respectively.

Regular updation of its knowledge base, running customer awareness programmes, efficient utilisation of financial resources, strengthening service infrastructure, cost cutting measures, and expansion to 27 districts of Bihar have helped it achieve fast-paced growth. The company’s emphasis has been on building a direct and personal relationship with customers on a long-term basis, follow-up after feedback is received, and periodical meetings of technical experts with business supporters.

The company expects a growth rate of 20 percent, and plans to achieve this by expanding its branch network.

Nortech Infonet, Kochi

Benley Noronha

With an impressive growth of 37 percent in 2005-06, the company recorded a turnover of Rs 35 crore, out of which Rs 28 crore was contributed by the enterprise business and the rest came from SOHO and retail.

A large chunk of enterprise revenues, nearly Rs 14 crore, originated from systems. Rs 10.5 crore came from networking solutions, Rs 5.5 crore from storage and security solutions, and the remaining from the provision of professional services.

The company attributed its growth to geographical expansion into new markets such as Chennai, Bangalore, Coimbatore and Indore. Also, the decision to invest in training and certification in emerging technologies such as data storage, data security and converged networks (IP telephony, wireless networking and so on) paid off.

“We segmented the market vertical-wise, studied the nature and behaviour of each vertical, and provided customised solutions according to requirements and criticality. This resulted in higher hit-ratios and profitability,” says Benley Noronha, CEO. The company intentionally increased the ratio of business from enterprise solutions based on emerging technologies.

Nortech did integration of voice and data on an IP network for an insurance company; the project was worth Rs 7 crore. For a BPO, the company did networking by WAN and LAN integration on fibre by setting up 800 nodes; this project was worth Rs 3 crore.

The company added Annex Gate Surveillance solutions and Syntex Document Management solutions, and became the implementation/support partner for ERP and CRM solutions from 3i Infotech.

In FY 05-06, Nortech implemented an organisational change programme using the services of Training Workz, a consulting firm, across all departments; this contributed to improved customer and employee satisfaction, and in turn impacted profitability.

An ISO-certified company, Nortech invested Rs 15 lakh in internally implementing ERP and CRM solutions from 3i Infotech which helped in streamlining back-office activities.

The company registered about 20 percent growth and recorded a turnover of Rs 3.25 crore in 2005-06. Out of these about 78 percent of the revenues came from the enterprise solutions business and rest from distribution of Dax networking products.

FY05-06 saw the company add several enterprise products and solutions—wireless from 3Com, UPS from Numeric, security products from SonicWall and Trend Micro and Facility Management Services with comprehensive maintenance service covering the entire IT infrastructure.

With its focus on SMBs, the company did well to bag several large projects the largest of which came from a local realty firm Infra Housing worth Rs 15 lakh for setting up the entire network on turnkey basis for its corporate office and branches.

Another project was bagged from Lotus8 Hotels for Rs 8 lakh for networking 155 nodes. It was awarded a prestigious government project under the Information Kerala Mission for networking of municipalities across the state.

The company adopted the try-and-buy approach providing live demos at the client’s site and allowing them to use the product before buying. Cyberland converted all its branches into independent profit centres, helping the company minimise costs and maximise profits. The company has an online accounting system with centralised billing for all branches for managing inventory and finances.
