Trimentus Technologies is an India based Process and product improvement service provider focusing on model based consultancy, training, appraisal services. In this interview, their CEO and Chairman, Dr. S Ravichandran, speaks about their organizations achievements in their short span of 3 years, current challenges of the industry and Trimentus' invaluable contribution to the global IT industry.

How do quality and process improvement initiatives help the IT Community? Why are certifications like CMMI and ISO so helpful and why are IT organizations coveting them?

A sound process is tantamount for organizational growth. Several years ago, IT organizations were just 20 to 30 people strong. Fledging units were managed by controlled by their CEOs and Managers who were intelligent and mature enough to organize and run such small units. However, if organizations were to grow to 100 and then to 500 and like that now to 25000 and 30000+ (like TCS and Infy), we need to have disciplined processes where all activities are streamlined and operations are seamlessly performed. This is the main reason why sound processes are required. These processes are put into place using real-world models such as CMM, CMMI, ISO etc. Fundamentally, we have to understand that Quality is not a "value-add". It is a mandatory requirement and it's the responsibility of every organization to provide it.

How does Trimentus provide help organizations services in this area?

We partner with these organizations to study their current processes, identify the strengths, weaknesses and improvements in their existing system. After that, we work with these organizations hand-in-hand to redefine their processes to create practices which best suit their organizational needs. We employ the best of the class, highly skilled and experienced members who bring with them the best practices of several top-notch organizations which get filtered into our clients to provide a continuous feedback during their process implementation. We have a training division, Trimentus engineering Institute, which provides client specific, role based and public courses in more than 40 specialized process fields. Moreover, we engage clients in simulating process deliberations which has led to process automation initiatives being executed to reduce the overall cycle time greatly. The appraisals that we perform are highly objective and add tremendous value to the clients, not in just obtaining the model ratings and certifications, but also in truly adding quality to their services and products. These activities are actively supplemented through the company's Einstein Research Laboratory (ERL), where Trimentus innovates and develops new models, tools and processes. The results of the Einstein Research labs are seamlessly integrated with the business divisions. Infact, out of the data collected by our clients, they report a 45% improvement in schedule adherence, 55% reduction in defect reported, 35% increase in overall productivity and a whopping 50% decrease in project costs. This is our true measure of success.

What is presence of Trimentus outside India? what companies do you work with?

Trimentus, while it is based out of India, has truly grown global. At the last count, we now work in 28 different countries all across the world including countries like Denmark, Philippines, Vietnam, Brazil, Egypt etc other than our stronghold in countries like China, US, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia etc. We infact have several new clients signed up in both emerging and traditional markets. Our customer base includes companies such as HP, IBM, Accenture, Oracle, EDS, Sony, Acer, Panasonic, Toshiba, Verizon, Phillips, Sify, Polaris, Politec, Trend Micro etc. As you can see, we work with both Product and service organizations to provide quantitative benefits to our clients.

KPQR: Ensuring Information Security (IS) in the E-Era

Globalization has increased the usage of Information technology world wide leading to growth in BPO, KPO and software development. At the same time there are number of reports of loss of business /confidentiality due to information security breach. Hence, the customers are increasingly becoming information security conscious. In this context, a certified Information security management System can demonstrate organisation's commitment to information security and customer satisfaction. Established in 2005, the Chennai-based Knowledge Partner QR (KPQR) is a quality auditing organization that aims at providing Quality Management System Certification services and IS assurance services in accordance with national and international norms. KPQR is committed to the promotion of international standards in IS, and provides its clients unbiased evaluation of conformance audit against specific IS standards. KPQR has an Advisory Board that formulates policy matters related to operation of the audit and certification activity. With Deming's PDCA process approach, KPQR auditors assess the Information Security Management Systems and measures compliance against elected standards and controls.

How does your business model support these activities?

First of all, we believe in our human resource capabilities. We are currently the largest process improvement service provider in Asia in terms of consultant capacity and Lead appraiser strengths. We have a stringent recruitment policy and bring on board only top notch professionals who have a very sound practical and hand-on implementation capabilities. One of our main strengths is the consultant's ability to work with the clients through a very proactive approach. We also have very strong partners in various regions who I must appreciate since they provide not only market penetration but also assist us in offering multi-dimensional services. I must emphasize this point: Our multi-dimensional abilities enable our clients to obtain bespoke and focused services.Finally, being a young and vibrant organization, agility and adaptability comes naturally to us. There are countless occasions where my consultants have surprised even me by being so flexible to changing customer needs, situations and having the required wide range to accommodate requests on the fly.
