Red Hat’s 2006-07 plans will help cut IT costs

Red Hat’s plans for the year 2006-07 focus on virtualisation, stateless Linux and developer enablement. With companies increasingly looking at reducing the cost of IT infrastructure, Red Hat feels that its focus areas will be the key levers to reduce costs.

The launch of Red Hat Enterprise Linux v.3 has marked the company’s long-term Open Source Architecture strategy. The original architecture helped make Red Hat Enterprise Linux a platform for commercial IT deployments.

Brian Stevens, Chief Technology Officer at Red Hat said, “The emerging technologies will make the deployment of open source software strategic for customers in the coming years. Virtualisation and stateless Linux will be the levers for accomplishing operational efficiency and agility. Also, we will focus resources on providing a development-oriented environment so as to support open source and partner-development efforts.”

The company will work with partners, the community and customers to help improve the quality and shorten the time-to-market of software development projects through open source tools and processes. “A combination of open source development tools and distributed development processes are yielding significant increases in software quality while decreasing time-to-market,” said Paul Cormier, Executive Vice-president, Engineering, Red Hat.

The company’s specific plans for enabling developers include continued investment in open source tools such as Eclipse, SystemTAP and Frysk, expansion of developer-focussed content and services, and training targeted at commercial application developers.
