Sybase’s ASE15

Features: Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise is a database management system. Softjin’s GDSIIZIP

Features: GDSIIZIP is a tool that compresses large IC layout files in GDSII format up to 20 times. Two metrics commonly used to evaluate compression technologies in GDSIIZIP are compression ratios—the ratio of the size of the original file to the compressed design file—and the time required to perform the compression itself. On an average, the use of GDSIIZIP produces 20X compression ratios.

EDA Tools that generate or consume GDSII layout data can integrate this technology into their tools through an API that is available with GDSIIZIP. The integration enables the existing GDSII generating tools to generate compressed layout data at the source, and the compressed layout data can be selectively de-compressed.

Additional features include filtering certain layers, filtering out geometries with distinct characteristics such as self-intersecting polygons or paths. GDSIIZIP has a built-in verifier that offers on-the-spot verification to check correctness of the compressed file.

Acer’s Altos G320

Features: Acer has announced the launch of its Altos server. The Altos G320 is a single-socket server and comes with an Intel EM64T and dual-core CPU technology.

The Altos G320 can accommodate up to four hard disk drives, each featuring the Acer Easy-Swap technology. It comes with dual-core Intel Pentium D processor and supports up to 2x1MB L2 Cache @FSB800 MHz. The Acer Altos G320 also supports Extended Memory 64 Technology to accommodate further adaptations of the 32- or 64-bit operating systems and applications. It also carries three PCI Express slots and two PCI slots to support a wide range of add-on cards.

Some other features include up to 8 GB of unbuffered ECC DDR-2 memory, on-board SATA RAID 0, 1, and 10. Users can also choose to use the optional SATA or SCSI RAID controller and dual Gigabit NICs on-board.

Features: Maxtor has launched Maxtor OneTouch III with automated backup and restore capabilities for Mac and PC users which allow users to configure the solution for either RAID 0 or RAID 1.

RAID 0 divides a data stream and writes pieces of it to both drives at once, a process called striping that enables faster write and read times for speedy applications such as video editing and game loading.

RAID 1, also called mirroring, takes everything that gets written to the primary hard drive and creates a copy of it on the second drive.

It comes with a feature called Sync with the ability to automatically synchronise files between two or more systems on the same operating platform to its external storage solution. Maxtor DriveLock comes with a password protection option to safeguard contents if the drive is lost or stolen, and includes new software tools to synchronise data between two or more computers and to help repair PC systems after a damaging spyware or virus attack.

Quantum’s DLT-V4

Features: Quantum has announced the launch of the DLT-V4 drive, the latest offering in its value line of tape drive products for backup, recovery and archive for small and medium-sized business (SMB) customers. The DLT-V4 drive combines capacity and performance. These features include DLTSage for predictive and preventive diagnostic manageability, and DLTIce for meeting regulatory compliance requirements through standard media and Write Once Read Many capability.

Some of the features include 320 GB of compressed capacity and a 72 GB/hour compressed transfer rate. The DLT-V4 drive has four times the capacity and three times the speed of existing DAT 72 tape drives. In addition, the DLT-V4 tape drive comes with a SATA interface.

The DLT-V4 drive also comes with DLTtape VS1 media.

Features: Trek has launched its mini thumb drive that includes functions such as storage of accounting data files or CAD files. It can also store and transfer multimedia data files that include digital audio and video files. Additional uses include transfer of presentation files from desktop to notebook, and transfer of files between desktop PCs, notebooks, table PCs, photocopiers, projectors and printers.

It features integrated cap design, security zone software that allows private/public access, and plug-and-play via USB port. According to the company, the product consumes less power under both active and suspend modes, and requires no external power supply. It comes with write protection features.

The hardware requirements are IBM PC or 100 percent-compatible desktop personal computers/notebooks/sub-notebooks/laptops with USB (Pentium at 100 MHz or higher).
