Uptime Champion 2005

The show must go on

Meet four champions who are the best in the business when it comes to optimising infrastructure uptime.

The Uptime Champion award is constituted to honour those organisations which feel that network downtime is unacceptable. Non-availability costs a fortune not to mention the loss of valuable customers. The awards are presented in association with Emerson Network Power. According to a MAIT-Emerson survey, India Inc loses more than Rs 22,000 crore annually due to network downtime. With sensitive network equipment at the heart of every business transaction, IT infrastructure needs to be guaranteed with an uptime of 99.999 percent and protection available 24x7.

However, a power solution cannot assure the uptime of your networks. To guarantee optimal reliability of networks, organisations require a well-thought infrastructure uptime strategy that includes critical elements such as precision air-conditioning solutions, monitoring systems, scalability, and redundancy. Thus, the award is for organisations and their IT heads that are determinedly working to improve the overall reliability of their IT infrastructure thereby reducing costs and improving productivity. The award is presented to a CIO who has implemented a solution that guarantees optimal infrastructure uptime.

Prakash Bajpai, President, Enterprise, Reliance Infocomm, accepting the award in the Telecom category from Gene Hayden, VP, Emerson Network Power, APAC.
Satish Naralkar, MD & CEO, NSE.iT, accepting the award in the BFSI category from Gene Hayden, VP, Emerson Network Power, APAC.
Anil Kumar Kaushik, DGM (IS Application), BPCL, receiving the award from Gene Hayden, VP, Emerson Network Power, APAC, in the General Industries category.
Rajeev Gerela, General Manager, Technologies, Wipro BPO, accepting the award in the IT/ITeS segment from Gene Hayden, VP, Emerson Network Power, APAC.

And the winners are...

In the BFSI segment, S Naralkar, National Stock Exchange, received the honours, while Anil Kumar Kaushik, Bharat Petroleum, lifted the trophy in the General Industries segment. Says Naralkar, MD & CEO of NSE.iT, “We are thrilled to receive this award. Considering that an organisation like ours needs high uptime (especially during peak trading hours), we feel good about this.” Kaushik, DGM (IS Application), BPCL said, “Considering that BPCL’s changeover for upgrade was pre-planned and was an uphill task that required training of 3,100 users spread across India, we feel that our innovative approach paid rich dividends.”

Rajeev Gerela, General Manager, Technologies, Wipro BPO, said, “This award is innovative because a lot of people undermine the importance of uptime in technology. Since it is non-glamorous it does not come to the forefront, but is a crucial element in an organisation.”

Prakash Bajpai, President, Enterprise, Reliance Infocomm, says, “Considering that Reliance Infocomm is rolling out services and adding subscribers rapidly, it is of utmost importance to us to maintain almost 100 percent uptime.”
