Cognizant announces launch of development centre in Mumbai

Lakshmi Narayanan

Cognizant Technology Solutions, one of the leading software development companies, has announced the launch of its latest software development centre in Mumbai at the Hiranandani IT Park in Powai.

“We are planning to invest approximately $76 million in phase 2 (2005-2006) in the India Construction Programme. We are also building a new, fully-owned techno-complex in Bangalore, and are expanding further in Chennai, Pune and Kolkata,” says Lakshmi Narayanan, President & CEO, Cognizant. The company is expecting its global headcount to exceed 23,000 by December 2005, of which about 70 percent would be in India. Presently, it employs over 20,000 professionals globally, of which 15,000 professionals are in India across different centres.

Cognizant is planning to invest over $1.4 million in the Mumbai development centre. It has already invested approximately $45 million in phase 1 (2003-2004) in its India Construction Programme for techno-complexes in Kolkata, Pune and Chennai.

Currently Cognizant has approximately 100 professionals in the Mumbai centre, which is servicing a global pharmaceutical customer. The centre has a capacity to accommodate about 750 professionals.

“Mumbai is a strategic development centre for Cognizant, similar to the ones that we have in Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Coimbatore. This centre will strengthen our ability to provide increasing value to our pharmaceutical and financial services customers, tapping into the rich talent pool available here in those industries,” remarks Narayanan.

“We have started our operations in Mumbai with a core team of senior professionals from within Cognizant to drive the growth of our Mumbai centre and to ensure that we maintain customer focus, provide business and technology-integrated solutions, and preserve employee orientation,” affirms R Chandrasekaran, Managing Director, Cognizant.

Cognizant has also announced that it is in the process of starting development work on Customer Relationship Management, data warehousing and business intelligence from Mumbai.
