Symantec reports mass mailing worm

Symantec has reported a mass mailing worm called W32.Zotob.C@mm. This worm opens a back door and exploits the Microsoft Windows Plug-and-Play Buffer Overflow Vulnerability. It gathers e-mail addresses from the Windows Address Book and from other locations. It affects Windows 2000, 95/98, Me, NT, Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP. Symantec reckons this is a high threat security risk.

Security vulnerability in Veritas backup products

A security vulnerability in Veritas backup products has been detected. By exploiting this flaw, an attacker can get remote access and download arbitrary files. Affected are the backup servers for Veritas Backup Exec, media servers running the Veritas NetWare Media Server Option, and the system running the remote agents for Windows, Unix and Linux servers. The remote agent is used to trigger backup of the data. Fixes for this vulnerability are available at the vendor’s Web site.
