Seagate’s new kids on the block

Seagate has announced a range of products targeted at OEMs in the consumer electronics, enterprise, desktop and mobile computing segments. “Our storage innovations are driving new capabilities into applications of all kinds, from the home to the office to the road and beyond,” says Sharad Srivastava, Country Manager for Seagate in India.

The consumer electronics offerings include the EE25 Series, LD25 Series, the DB35 Series, the 8 GB CompactFlash photo hard drive and the ST1 Series.

Mobile computing

  • ST1 Series: A hard drive designed for use in handheld and CompactFlash applications. It will let users store libraries of music of up to 200 hours (4,000 songs), and video and digital photos. This hard drive is designed for a high-vibration environment such as jogging. The ST1 Series supports low-power modes with a drive’s time-to-ready of 1.2 seconds. It is shipping limited quantities of the 8 GB ST1 and LD25 series to select OEMs.
  • EE25 Series: Hard drives specifically for use in cars. The company says that this is the world’s first hard drive with extreme temperature resistance. It can operate in temperatures ranging from minus 30 to 85 degrees centigrade, in high humidity and at high altitudes. The drive is targeted at auto makers and system manufacturers to create DVD-free navigation systems and car entertainment services.

The notebook segment is being targeted by Seagate with two new drives.

Momentus 5400.3: A 2.5-inch notebook drive which utilises perpendicular recording. Seagate’s new 160 GB disc drive combines 5,400 rpm performance with 25 percent more capacity than the largest notebook drive currently available, according to the company.

Momentus FDE: This family of hard drives has hardware-based full disk encryption technology, providing protection against unauthorised access to data on stolen or retired notebook PCs. FDE technology requires a user key to encrypt all data, and goes beyond selected files or partitions on the drive.

Desktop PC drives

The Barracuda 7200.9: Combining 3 Gbps SATA-interface throughput with 500 GB of capacity, 16 MB of cache and Native Command Queuing. The new flagship drive in the Barracuda family is aimed at increasing productivity in a desktop PC hard drive.

External Drives

The external drives provide new interfaces and capacities.

  • The Seagate external hard drive: An external drive with 500 GB, the new FireWire 800 (IEEE 1394b) interface is capable of supporting data rates of up to 800 Mbps.
  • The Seagate portable external hard drive : This comes with a 120 GB capacity. In addition, this drive offers a FireWire (IEEE 1394a) option for on-the-go storage.

Both the Barracuda 7200.9 and the 120 GB portable external hard drive will be shipped in the third quarter of this year.
