Piper
at the gates of dawn
Heres something for Indian netizens to cheer about in
2005. Huffing, puffing and crawling, the Indian broadband
subscriber base has reached 3.1 lakh as on September, 2004.
This is a big jump from the 1.3 lakh mark at the end of 2003.

access enablers
DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is a technology that permits
data transmission over telephone lines. A DSL line can carry
both data and voice signals at the same time. Analysts expect
DSL to compete with the cable modem in serving bandwidth hungry
applications to homes and small businesses.
Behind
broadband
Broadband is a collective term for a group of technologies
that enable high-speed Internet access, at speeds of up to
two megabits per second (Mbps). That is up to 40-times faster
than the conventional dial-up medium.
The
Net on a fat pipe
The broadband access scenario in India is a mix of DSL, cable
and wireless with some amount of satellite-based usage by
the financial sector. This market has started to grow with
the onset of higher bandwidth applications as well as the
realisation that high speeds coupled with good service levels
do not have to be an unduly expensive proposition.
