$ 1.6 billion fab project
According to Andhra Pradesh's IT&C department, the country's
first silicon chip fabrication (fab) facility in the private sector is likely
to come up in Hyderabad. According to the department, Intellect Inc, the South
Korea-based semiconductor major having eight fab facilities across the globe,
will be setting up the $ 1.6 billion project under a consortium model involving
the state government and original equipment manufacturers.
The facility will manufacture chips up to 200 mm thickness to meet the different
needs of the electronic industry. The project will focus on making chips for
different applications and gadgets right from mobile phones and washing machines
to hi-end technology applications. The facility is expected to be implemented
in two phases, for which the state government has allotted 50 acres of land
in the Hardware Technology Park at Shamshabad on the outskirts of Hyderabad.
