HCL Infosystems taps e-governance for PC business

Circuit EC / Bangalore

HCL Infosystems sees e-governance projects as a key enabler for its PC business in 2004. The company is working on some large e-governance projects with the governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The company hopes that Karnataka’s e-governance policies (for example the eBhoomi project involving computerisation of land records) will help expand its PC sales this year. Currently HCL is working on another project—computerisation of the Karnataka police department for maintaining crime and criminal records. The company is also training Karnataka police personnel in software and hardware. HCL is working on a similar project with the government of Tamil Nadu for computerising their police departments. CEO Ajay Chowdhary says that the company hopes to capitalise on IT initiatives of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments.
