AVL shows the way

The India Trends story on ’Automated Vehicle Locator Systems’ [Express Computer, July 5, 2004] is quite interesting. It is true that in India awareness about the existence of AVLs is not high. The reason for it is partly due to the expensive hardware components that make a AVL system. Government support in bringing the hardware prices down can go a long way in boosting the adoption of AVL in the logistics sector. AVLs prove that technology can not only act as a business enabler, but can also help reduce uncertainties associated with business

The 1 GB bandwagon

The article “Gmail- changing e-mail as we know it” [Express Computer, July 5, 2004] comes at a time when there is a buzz regarding e-mail both among service providers and customers. The review did a good job in comparing various e-mail services. It will certainly help users like me to choose what is most appropriate to our needs.

Workforce size

The article ‘How to determine your workforce size’ (IT People, June 21, 2004) was very informative. The writer has successfully managed to highlight the repercussions of under-recruitment and over-recruitment. This problem, in fact, has been plaguing many IT organisations, but few speak about it in industry circles. It is a critical issue as employee headcount has a direct impact on the cost, and affects the bottomline. In a knowledge-based industry like ours, staff costs account for the maximum operating budget and needs to be kept under control. Write ups on these issues will keep us updated on trends at the workplace.

Tackling the corporate environment

I am a keen reader of IT People, it provides an interesting insight to many issues that might not be articulated, sometimes even in a corporate environment. The article ‘How competent employees transform a company’ [Express Computer, June 29, 2004] was one such piece. The article pointed out how both employees and organisations can benefit by the optimum utilisation of competency. The piece helped highlight the barriers that exist between employees and management.

Another section that I look forward to is Ementors. Though the queries that are sent might refer to individual problems, they are similar to issues being faced by many of us and we benefit from the answers. Recently I had to shift from the department that I had worked in for ten years. The department was closed down by the management, and hence I had to decide whether to move to a different job or to adapt to another position in my company. Taking a cue from a letter by a reader I tailored my action plan. I hope your magazine will continue to address such issues
