Krone Comm to launch 10 GB copper Ethernet

Srinivas R / Bangalore

Krone Communications is planning to launch the industry’s first 10 gigabit copper Ethernet, named CopperTen, in the second quarter of this year. Copper is the conventional communication medium, though, of late, fibre optics has come up as a medium that can carry a larger amount of traffic.

So far, there was no technology which could help copper carry more load. In this context, the IEEE (Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers), the body responsible for Ethernet standards worldwide, had asked the industry to come out with 10 GB Ethernet over copper cabling as a realistic and cost-effective proposition.

“In November 2003, Krone came out with the product and the IEEE has approved it,” said D S Nagendra, country sales manager-PremisNET, Krone Communications. Its low cost is a major advantage of the product when compared to fibre optic cables. Ten gigabit Ethernet based on fibre optics is already available in the market.
