FedEx announces technology strategy for India

CIRCUIT EC / Bangalore

FEDERAL Express has announced the launch of two technology solutions—the FedEx Global Trade Manager (GTM) and FedEx Insight in India. The company also announced that it would equip its couriers with handhelds. To begin with, this device is being introduced in Mumbai, and the strategy will be extended to all metros thereafter.

Jacques Creeten, managing director, FedEx India said, “Information technology has been central to FedEx’s strategy around the world. We have spent $1.3 billion on the development of IT and will continue to do so in coming years.” FedEx has close to 5,000 people working in its IT department, and has a partnership with Mphasis in India where about 300 professionals are working on nine IT projects for it.

The newly launched FedEx GTM is an online consultancy on paperwork for customs clearance targeted at small and medium enterprises. It helps determine which documents should accompany a customer’s international shipments and lets customers print and fill them up, helping them save time on potential border delays. FedEx Insight is a Web-based tracking solution that automatically tracks a customer’s incoming, outgoing and third-party payer shipments without entering the tracking number. It helps identify FedEx shipments by associating them with a customer and matching the account number.

Handhelds will be given to all courier staff enabling them to advise customers on country-specific documentation requirements, and provide information on service availability by country, postal code or city.
