Unisys sets up development centre

Circuit EC / Bangalore

Cal Killen

Unisys has set up its first global development centre for software development, maintenance, business process outsourcing and technical help desk services in India. The company plans to hire 300 people by the year-end and will add another 700 by 2005. During the next five years, Unisys plans to hire 2,000 people and will be investing $180 million to meet its expansion plans. Unisys will however continue to work with third-party independent software vendors (ISVs) and BPO firms in India, who will supplement the work at the new centre. Currently Unisys outsources work to Hexaware, Caritor and NIIT in India.

Cal Killen, vice president, Solution Development and Unisys Global Services, said, “The expansion of global sourcing options supports Unisys’s commitment to meeting client needs while consistently managing costs. The initial focus at the Indian centre will be to hire software engineers and later BPO agents. Our BPO work here would revolve around providing BPO services to the financial sector and include tasks like mortgage processing, insurance and cheque processing.”

Unisys is a Fortune 500 company and has Indian customers such as Air India, State Bank of India and ICICI Bank.
