AMD’s (Advanced Micro Devices) decision to set up its first microprocessor
design programme in India came late but it has already chalked out big plans
for India. Its India Engineering Centre in Bangalore will be fully operational
by July 2004. AMD plans to hire 40 people by end-2004 and it will add another
80 by 2005. The centre will hire experienced design engineers with a minimum
of three to four years experience. AMD will be spending $5 million over the
next three years to establish the centre and to ramp up its operations in India.
Ajay Marathe, corporate vice president, IT, Global Supply Management and president
of AMD India said, “We have aggressive goals to enhance our 64-bit microprocessor
offerings and our Indian engineering team is expected to play a major role in
enhancing them.” The India Engineering Centre team will work in close
collaboration with the US team to produce future generations of AMD microprocessors.
A core leadership team will relocate from the US to mentor and lead the Indian
team during the initial stages. Logic, circuit, physical design, computer-aided
design and engineering work will be done at the Indian centre.
