Wind River gets into embedded Linux

CIRCUIT EC/ Bangalore

WIND River has formed a business alliance with Red Hat to jointly develop Red Hat Embedded Linux for the Device Software Optimisation (DSO) market. Red Hat Linux will be the foundation of Wind River’s Linux-based platforms that will be integrated with the company’s VxWorks development tools, middleware and services.

Says Ajit Edlabadkar, country manager, India, Wind River, “As per VDC (Venture Development Corporation) estimates, last year the market opportunity in embedded Linux was $62.6 million. This is expected to triple by 2007. Our finding is that by 2009 there will be 14 billion devices that will need to connect to each other and to enterprise applications.” For the first time, developers will be able to standardise device software development across the enterprise with VxWorks and Linux.

There are about three million devices that work on Wind River’s VxWorks platform. Edlabadkar says that using DSO on Linux will help manufacturers lower the total cost of developing software for devices, reduce risk, improve product quality and bring products more rapidly to the market.
