Dell to ramp up India team by 2,000 with new centre

Kavita Nair / Mumbai

The world’s largest PC maker, Dell, is growing its presence in India and has set up its third centre in Chandigarh. This will increase its headcount by about 50 percent with the addition of over 2,000 professionals here. The company has taken this decision despite some customer service related problems faced by its Bangalore centre last year.

Dell officials confirmed that the company was planning to set up a centre in Chandigarh but declined to comment any further.

An e-mail reply said: “As a growing company, Dell regularly looks globally for new locations and engages in discussions with government officials and others to assess the suitability of new sites. Consistent with such efforts, we have had discussions in Chandigarh and other cities in India. We view our discussions with government officials and business partners as private and, therefore, will not comment further on the status or details of those discussions.”

While the spokeswoman refrained from divulging the details of Dell’s current employee strength in India, industry reports have indicated that it stood at 4,000 as on December 31, 2003. Commenting on its current operations in Bangalore and Hyderabad, the spokeswoman indicated that Dell continues to support business and home customers across countries from its India Customer Centre.
