SM-352

Samsung India Electronics’ IT and Telecom Division recently announced the launch of the Combo Drive SM-352: Priced at Rs 5,500, the SM-352 has been designed to replace the DVD and a CD read-write drive with one single drive that can perform both functions. The SM -352 is capable of 52X CD-R write speeds.

The SM 352 writes at 52X speed and re-writes at 24X speed, reads regular CD-ROM media at 52X speed and reads DVD media at 16X speed. The combo drive carries warranty of 15 months from the date of manufacturing.

FAStT600

IBM has launched its TotalStorage FAStT600 storage servers that will offer customers enterprise-class storage features, including greater capacity, speed, performance and broader host system support. The new supercharged turbo option storage server has been designed to offer increased throughput performance, greater maximum capacity (up to 10 additional terabytes) and enhanced platform support for a wide variety of UNIX and Intel platforms. FAStT600 turbo option is also targeted to the life sciences industry where there is a need to store and easily access enormous amounts of data.

Powered by two gigabit per second fibre channel technology, the system can scale to more than 16 terabytes and 112 drives to support growing storage requirements created by e-business applications and data-intensive image files for customers.

The FAStT600 will feature IBM’s FlashCopy and VolumeCopy capabilities to help protect businesses in the event of a disaster. While FlashCopy software provides an advanced, fast replication facility VolumeCopy software features a duplication facility.

Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) has introduced the Hitachi Thunder 9580V, an ultra high-end modular storage system that HDS claims outperforms all competitive products. The Thunder 9580V extends the application capabilities of modular storage and allows customers to cost-effectively do more, including multi-tiered storage deployment in combination with the Hitachi Lightning 9900 V Series, and large-scale consolidation of mid-range JBOD or older, enterprise-class storage.

Thunder 9580V will allow enterprises to exploit the benefits of storage consolidation with lower investments. The 9580V enhancements allow customers to expand their use of the virtual storage ports feature, which allows heterogeneous platform connectivity to scale without having to add storage units.

P1342M - uPSD3300

STMicroelectronics has introduced its Turbo µPSD3300 series of fast growing µPSD family of 8051-class embedded flash microcontrollers. The µPSD family offers system-level-integration with Flash and SRAM densities (up to 256 Kbytes and 32 Kbytes, respectively) for general-purpose 8-bit microcontrollers. The Turbo µPSD3300 series increases performance to 10MIPS peak and adds a rich peripheral set to form an ideal SoC for embedded control applications.

Enhancements for the µPSD3300 series include a 16-bit programmable counter array (PCA), 10-bit resolution ADC channels, SPI and IrDA interfaces. In addition, the JTAG in-system programming interface has been enhanced to support JTAG emulation, thus eliminating the need for a hardware in-circuit emulator.

Bankstar Technologies has announced the release of MESA, the company’s first product built on its platform-independent technology, christened Genesis. New products developed by Bankstar will allow the same code to run on the Windows, Linux and UNIX environments.

MESA (multi environment signature authentication) system allows branches of banks with distributed databases to authenticate signatures and obtain account mandates of customers at any of their other branches. MESA has dual client access, both fat- and thin-clients, allowing large banks having thousands of branches and small banks with a handful of branches to implement it easily.

SMT SDIO

Molex has launched the 67781 series of unshielded SMT Secure Digital Input Output (SDIO) memory card connectors. With a choice of no stand-off or 1.80 mm stand-off versions, these inexpensive, lightweight connectors feature good solderability while offering rugged performance and ease-of-use. The 1.80mm stand-off version even allows a 1.5 mm high application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chip to be mounted beneath the connector. Both versions of SDIO card connectors accept industry standard SD memory cards in various applications.

The connectors are designed to withstand high durability card insertion and extractions of up to 10,000 times; and provide good resistance to shock and vibration while ensuring high electrical contact integrity when used. The plastic cover of the connector is made of heat-resistant polymer and provides good protection of electrical contacts as well as added card stability.

The connector’s unique stainless steel card lock pin gives good mechanical support during card insertion, while offering high chemical and moisture corrosion resistance. It also provides card insertion detection and read-write switch functions by the protect pin extension, which makes contact with the protect-and-detect pin. The protect-and-detect terminals of the connector provide card security and read-write capabilities. Beveled spring contacts within the connector housing secure the connector to the card mating.

Iomega recently unveiled one of the first DVD drives in the market to support all major DVD and CD formats, including DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW, and DVD-RAM. The new Iomega super DVD drives come with a suite of software solutions, including the award-winning Iomega Automatic Backup software for real-time protection of critical files.
