Product Launches

APC
Back-UPS ES 500

APC has launched the Back-UPS ES 500, specifically designed to handle Indian power line conditions. Priced at Rs 2,995 plus taxes, the device provides half an hour of backup for a single PC with a 14-inch monitor. Of course, newer PCs with 15-inch or 17-inch monitors will find backup time shorter but it is better than what the average 500 VA UPS offers.

The ES 500 offers three power backup sockets and one surge protector socket for the printer. It has a circuit breaker, a definite plus when compared to the fuse, as it’s a whole lot easier to reset the circuit breaker when it trips than to replace a fuse. The UPS supports lightning surge protection for your modem phone line and a network cable. The battery can be replaced when it wears out. It’s almost as easy to access as the battery in your stereo.

APC provides a USB cable for connecting the UPS to the PC so that the bundled software PowerChute Personal Edition can monitor power conditions. If a PC doesn’t support USB, a serial cable is available upon request.

SolidWorks
SolidWorks Routing

SolidWorks has unveiled SolidWorks Routing, an easy-to-use tool that gives automated tube, pipe, and cable route design capabilities in one application. With SolidWorks Routing, customers can now complete their entire product design in one application, faster and with fewer errors than ever before. The software package will be shipped as part of the recently launched SolidWorks 2004 3D design software at a price of $4,000.

SolidWorks Routing is fully integrated with the company’s recently announced SolidWorks 2004. It targets machine and equipment designers who have traditionally been forced to choose between barely functional tools and expensive, highly specialised applications that don’t meet all of their needs.

The product is an all-inclusive package for customers who need to incorporate a variety of different routes into their product designs and eliminate much of the manual work that other routing software requires. For example, it allows customers to develop various route types in 3D designs, including pneumatic, hydraulic, piping, and cable routes for power and control functions, all without leaving the SolidWorks design application. This integrated approach ensures design and bill of material (BOM) accuracy and helps customers complete designs quickly to speed product to market process.

Features:

  • Streamlining routing design and manufacturing.
  • Intelligent connection points and fittings.
  • Intelligent route development.
  • Automatic bill of materials updating.
  • Fittings library.
  • Bend table creation.

Symantec
Norton Internet Security 2004

Symantec has announced the launch of Norton Internet Security 2004, an easy-to-use and comprehensive online security and privacy suite for home and small office PC users. Norton Internet Security 2004 will include Symantec’s best-of-breed anti-virus, firewall, intrusion detection, privacy protection, spam filtering, and content filtering solutions in a single tightly integrated suite.

Norton Internet Security 2004 will include Norton AntiVirus 2004, which introduces expanded threat detection. This new technology identifies certain emerging non-virus threats such as spyware, adware, and keystroke

logging programs. These rogue applications can compromise system security, pry into confidential data, and track online behaviour.

Norton AntiVirus 2004 will also proactively protect users of file-exchange services such as peer-to-peer networks by scanning for viruses in compressed file archives. Norton AntiVirus scans both incoming and outgoing e-mail and automatically removes viruses, worms, and Trojans as well as viruses hidden in e-mail and instant message attachments. In addition, worm and script blocking technologies automatically defend users against known and unknown threats without the need for virus definitions.

StorageTek
T9840C tape drive

StorageTek recently announced the availability of its T9840C tape drive, the latest evolution in StorageTek’s award-winning T9X40 family of tape drives. With the ‘fast access’ T9840C, customers can enjoy industry-leading data access speeds, significantly increased data transfer rates and double the capacity of T9840A and T9840B. The T9840C is the logical choice for enterprise customers requiring extremely rapid data access, unmatched reliability and power at a significantly lower price point than disk-based solutions. Existing T9840 customers can maximise earlier investment by reusing T9840 cartridges in the new drive, thereby doubling cartridge capacity.

Since the T9840C is backward read compatible with 9840A/B media cartridges, the upgrade to the new T9840C drives is virtually seamless.

StorageTek’s T9840C features 40 GB/cartridge capacity (uncompressed), 30 MB/second data throughput for faster backup and restores, and an industry-leading 12-second average data access time. Equipped with a native 2 GB Fibre Channel interface, the T9840C attaches directly to any storage area network (SAN) for high-speed connectivity without the need for add-on adapters. The T9840C also features StorageTek’s proprietary VolSafe advanced WORM (Write-Once-Read-Many) technology designed to support electronic data storage regulatory mandates. It also features a data channel device that enables higher densities and faster data throughput.

CSG Systems
Kenan FX

CSG Systems recently unveiled Kenan FX, a new offering that combines CSG’s strongest existing and acquired applications with new products and features in a single, easily integrated customer care and billing framework for the telecommunications marketplace. The products and modules available within Kenan FX are pre-integrated, share a common look-and-feel for all customer-facing functions and use a common middle layer architecture. This approach gives operators the flexibility to choose solutions that best fit their business needs while preserving their freedom to quickly add complementary tools to address emerging business models and specific business challenges.

Kenan FX is designed to serve the needs of the convergent global telecommunications marketplace, including next generation mobile, wireline, broadband and IP service providers. This new offering is available in a variety of delivery models, including as an in-house software solution, a service bureau or managed operations.

Another addition to the framework is a comprehensive middle layer architecture, which makes it easier and less costly to integrate products across the Kenan FX product portfolio as well as with third-party applications, ensuring a lower total cost of ownership over time.

At the heart of Kenan FX is the newest version of CSG Kenan/BP, a real-time billing platform that rates and bills for any transaction-based service in next generation mobile and wireline telephony, cable/satellite and IP markets. With a worldwide customer base in more than 40 countries, the CSG Kenan/BP solution supports any language and any currency.

Featured in this new release are enhancements to support next generation balance management, including event time unit credits, taxation, invoice calculation, discounting as well as tools that allow an operator to configure and manage the billing system self-sufficiently.

Kenan FX also provides a variety of integration technologies, including a comprehensive middle layer that includes a single API transaction set across all Kenan FX solutions, open APIs to reduce conversion time with third-party applications and high-level APIs that encapsulate business logic to simplify and speed up development tasks.
