Product Launches

Apple
Power Mac G5

Apple has launched the Power Mac G5, featuring the world’s first 64-bit desktop processor and the industry’s first 1 Ghz front-side bus. Powered by the PowerPC G5 processor designed by IBM and Apple, the Power Mac G5 is the first personal computer to utilise 64-bit processing technology for unprecedented memory expansion (up to 8 GB) and advanced 64-bit computation, while running existing 32-bit applications natively.

Delivering the industry’s highest system bandwidth, the G5 line offers dual 2.0 GHz PowerPC G5 processors, each with an independent 1 GHz front-side bus, for an astounding 16 Gbps of bandwidth. The line also features the industry’s highest bandwidth memory (400 MHz 128-bitn DDR SDRAM with throughput up to 6.4 Gbps); the industry’s fastest PCI interface available on a desktop (133 MHz PCI-X); and cutting-edge AGP AGP 8X pro graphics capabilities, all within a new professional aluminium enclosure featuring innovative computer controlled cooling for quiet operation.

The G5 processor architecture is based on a completely new execution core that features massively parallel computation for an unprecedented 215 in-flight instructions, full symmetric multi-processing, two double precision floating point units and an optimised Velocity Engine.

SMC Networks
SMC7404BRA

SMC Networks has announced the addition of a new four-port router, with built-in ADSL modem, to its award winning family of Barricade broadband routers. SMC Barricade four-port Router with built-in ADSL modem and print server (SMC7404BRA) is an all-in-one device designed to help SME and SOHO workers get maximum return-on-investment out of an ADSL broadband connection.

The router combines a printer port, four 10/100 RJ45 ports for connection to a PC or network and an additional RJ11 port that connects to an ADSL line. The integrated ADSL modem provides cost-effective broadband Internet access to multiple users (of up to 253 users) by sharing a single user account, and removes the need to buy or rent a separate ADSL modem. A built-in print server also allows multiple users to share a single printer. SMC7404BRA features a firewall with tasteful packet inspection, thus giving users peace of mind over security issues.

SMC has paid particular attention in the design of these products to the specific needs of the SOHO and the SME environment. For example, parents working from home, or business owners concerned with productivity levels, can block certain websites by entering either a URL address, or just a keyword of the website.

Connection to the Internet is simplified by SMC’s Web-based management tool, and a built-in DHCP server makes creation and expansion of networks around the routers simple and easy. The user’s interaction with the new Barricade’s is also an important factor: a graphical user interface is supplied for installation, configuration and management, and e-mail alerts are supplied with the wireless version to alert the user to attempts to hack into the network.

Features:

  • Integrated ADSL router.
  • Simultaneous Internet access for up to 253 PCs.
  • Local network connection via four 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports.
  • DHCP for dynamic IP configuration and DNS for domain name mapping.
  • Firewall with Stateful Packet Inspection, client privileges, intrusion detection, and NAT.
  • Easy set-up through a Web browser on any operating system that supports TCP/IP.

Discreet
Lustre

Discreet, a division of Autodesk, recently announced the launch of Lustre, its award winning, high performance software-based digital grading and colour correction system for interactive film look creation. Using the Lustre turnkey system, colourists and colour timers can collaborate with DPs and filmmakers to digitally adjust the colours and look of a film—from the most subtle changes to extravagant colour and lighting effects. Developed in conjunction with Hungary-based Colorfront, the Lustre turnkey system delivers an intuitive environment for interactive colour correction sessions, and provides efficiency benefits for digital intermediate and digital finishing processes. Because it is a software-based solution, Lustre offers the unique ability to introduce a parallel grading pipeline where multiple tasks can be accomplished simultaneously on common data, plus significant speed advantages over serialised hardware solutions.

Lustre processes images of any resolution (2K, 4K and above), and provides industry-leading primary and secondary colour correction tools. It supports standard film scan formats (Cineon and DPX), with real-time playback of up to 2K 10-bit RGB data. Other key features include: tracking, keying, dust biting, rotoscoping and pan and scan tools; logarithmic and linear colour manipulation and management; and accurate monitor/DLP projector calibration, enabling the highest quality digital mastering.

Pramati
Pramati Server 3.5

Pramati Technologies has announced the availability of Pramati Server 3.5, an enhanced release of its application server. The new release delivers higher performance and superior manageability for production applications. Pramati Server continues its strict adherence to open standards. Pramati Server 3.5 offers a matching level of capability as industry-leading application servers, at nearly a third the cost.

The server’s dynamic content caching technology enhances performance of content-intensive applications significantly (like online ticketing sites) and, along with the software load balancer bundled as part of the standard product, makes it an unbeatable value proposition. The product sells as a lower cost alternative to WebLogic Server from BEA Systems and WebSphere Server from IBM.

This release also carries the best tools for managing applications in production and application server clusters. A live demo site demo.pramati.com has been launched to provide an easy way to experience Pramati Server runtime environment. Pramati has also created a DevPortal, a separate site for its developers with documentation, discussion forums and support tools.

The product is available in two editions—standard and enterprise. The enterprise edition is priced at $5,000 per CPU and adds clustering and performance features over Standard Edition, which is priced at $2,500 per CPU.

EPSON
Stylus C43SX

Epson has announced the launch of the Epson Stylus C43SX, an entry-level printer targeted at the budget-conscious consumer. Ergonomically designed to minimise its footprint, the Stylus C43SX printers sport a cool, grey tone. With a built-in AC adapter and robust retractable tray to keep your printouts tidy, the printer is compact and convenient.

Epson’s Micro Piezo inkjet technology helps the Stylus C43SX printers achieve photo-quality output at a print resolution of up to 2880 optimised dpi. The C43SX includes an easy-to-use photo utility, PhotoQuicker3.4, that makes printing of photos easy and immediate with a large previewing window and a new red-eye reduction feature. The printers also support EXIF print, an industry standard supported by digital camera manufacturers, which records and uses information about various camera settings during image capture.

The C43SX delivers a fast 12 ppm for black text printing and 5.4 ppm for colour text printing, thanks largely to a faster ink firing frequency and bi-directional printing technology. In addition, Epson’s intelligent variable sized droplet technology allocates different ink droplet sizes for different print conditions to reduce waiting time. Using up to three different sizes, the Stylus C43SX printers can distinguish between a large or small swathe of colour and assign the appropriate sized droplet to speed up the printing process.

Attractively configured and protected by a one-year limited warranty, the C43SX is priced at Rs 3,950 and is available across the country.
