GTL, Redington
call off merger
GTL, a Mumbai-based network engineering and IT services company
and Singapore-based Redington Group, have announced that they have
mutually decided to call off the proposed acquisition/merger of
Redington with GTL.
Ness acquires
Apar
US-based IT services and solutions provider Ness Technologies has
acquired Apar Infotech, a Pittsburgh-based software services company,
in a stock swap valued at $78 million. With this merger, Ness anticipates
its total annual revenues to grow to $300 million and its workforce
will increase by 40 percent to 3,800 employees, a company statement
said.
IBM to set up
Centre of Excellence
IBM in a joint e-learning initiative with the government of Karnataka
will set up a centre of excellence at Hubli, which would be wholly
dedicated to the development of open source software. IBM will develop
an e-learning platform for BITES (Board for IT Education Standards)
for higher technical institutions in Karnataka and will work with
BITES and the Indian Institute of Information Technology.
HDS fine-tunes

After establishing a dominant position in the high-end enterprise
SAN segment, Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) is now aggressively targeting
the mid-sized segment with the Thunder series that comes with capacities
ranging from 360 GB to 32 terabytes. P P Subramaniam, country manager,
Hitachi India said, We have a product costing as less as $15,000
for the mid-sized segment. Our minimum target for the fiscal year
2003-04 would be to achieve a turnover of $2 million from the mid-sized
segment.
Informatica sets
up R&D centre
Informatica Corporation, has set up its R&D centre in Bangalore
and plans to invest $5 million out of the $48 million earmarked
for its global R&D expansion by the end of next year. The centre
will start with a headcount of 60, which is expected to be ramped
up to 120 by the end of 2004.
BenQ lines up
$50 mn for R&D
As part of the multi-pronged strategy for its Indian operations,
the $3 billion BenQ is planning to establish a research and development
(R&D) facility and call centre in the country. The company is
looking at investing $50 million to set up its R&D base in the
country.The company intends to set up a R&D base with 500 engineers
with expertise in mobile communication, including wireless.
IBM appoints
Rashi Peripherals
IBM India announced that it has extended its distribution network
by appointing Rashi Peripherals as national distributors for its
range of notebook computers (ThinkPad) and TFT monitors (ThinkVision).
Rashi would promote the ThinkPad and ThinkVision TFT monitors through
its 3000-strong reseller base across the country.
Enterasys opens
logistics centre
Enterasys Networks announced that it has opened a logistics support
centre that stocks spares for its range of networking products in
Bangalore. This facility will benefit its customers and partners
by making spares available within the next business day (NBD).
