Microsoft’s SAM push

Chitra Padmanabhan / Mumbai

Punit Vanvaria

To assist organisations in making optimal use of their software investments and to encourage use of authentic software, Microsoft is pushing the merits of software asset management (SAM). Through a series of brainstorming sessions, Microsoft intends to generate awareness on the issue of SAM amongst organisations and also help them to maximise their software asset RoI.

With the help of SAM tools, organisations can monitor their software investments and take well-informed decisions on their IT spend. SAM basically encourages organisations to treat their information technology resources as a capital asset and work more efficiently by taking into account data security, software compatibility and resource management issues.

“SAM tools go a long way in helping organisations gain greater control over the use of software deployed and plan future software needs. Moreover, it will encourage organisations to use genuine software since the price-issue can be tackled to a great extent,” says Punit Vanvaria, manager-business development for Microsoft Corporation India. For instance, organisations today have varied versions of Microsoft Office. With the use of SAM tools organisations can make accurate decisions as to the exact need for Windows XP version and Windows 98 version in terms of its usage. This will help them save a significant amount on costs.
