Apple to foray into devices market with QuickTime

Stanley Glancy / Mumbai

Dennis Biela

Apple is planning to introduce an enhanced version of its multimedia delivery system, QuickTime 6, in the Indian market. QuickTime, unlike traditional multimedia solutions, provides a 360-degree view of the content providing users with a three-dimensional experience. Apple is specifically bullish on the Indian handheld market, which it believes is entering a high growth phase. Said Apple’s Dennis Biela, “There is a big market for handheld devices in India. We are currently trying to incorporate QuickTime on hand phones, Palm and other handhelds wireless devices, which will open a huge market for us.”

The new release of QuickTime will support third generation partnership project or the 3GPP telecommunications standards for mobile systems, which will enable delivery of digital audio and video-to-PCs, set-top boxes and wireless devices. The technology will enable QuickTime users to capture videos, e-mail them to the PC and view them on their handhelds. Said Biela, “People in India are becoming more digitally aware. The past year has witnessed a tremendous growth in professional fields like photography, especially with people realising that digital photography is cheaper than films.”

Though the system is applicable across verticals, Apple expects sectors like travel, training, security and even the fire department to especially benefit from the technology. Said Biela, “If the fire department or security agencies can be provided with a full-dimensional layout of a room or a building it will enable them to carry out their work with clockwork precision, especially during emergencies.” Other than this Apple is also bullish on the education sector, which according to Biela has huge potential in the Indian market.
