MindTrees Bluetooth focus
KAVITHA VIVEK / Bangalore
MindTree Technologies is all set to step up activities
in the Bluetooth technology area, having put together a key portfolio
of Bluetooth components, including radio component, Bluetooth baseband,
LMP (link management protocol), Bluetooth stack and industry specific
profiles.
This initiative will be closely linked with the
companys product realisation strategy, which focuses
on building complete product reference designs to showcase its expertise
to customers.
To this end, MindTree is ready with its new small
form factor design for a Bluetooth-enabled headset (which features
Mindtrees Bluetooth stack and profile/memory).
The product has been licensed to a US-based customer
who will market it globally. MindTree Tech senior vice-president
Vinod P Deshmukh said that this was the second product that the
company was building following the first LAN access point product.
MindTree has emerged as one of the niche
players in the Bluetooth IP area and we want to further explore
this market, Deshmukh said.
According to industry estimates, in 2002 a total
of 35 million Bluetooth devices were sold and this figure is expected
to shoot up to 80-90 million devices (a majority of which will be
cellphones and wireless headsets) in 2003.
We expect the headset business to be a volume-driven
one, which is why we are seeing high interest levels in this product.
We have given the entire reference design, licensed the stack and
the profiles specific to the product, he added.
Some of the other products developed by MindTree
include a complete Bluetooth mouse implementation for a Japanese
customer and a Bluetooth enabled keyboard for a German client in
which MindTree applications and stacks were embedded.
