Indian IT industry poised to maintain a rising graph
Every year strategy and marketing consulting firm Skoch Consultancy Services releases its annual analysis of the Indian IT industry. The sixth annual edition, titled Browser 2002, was presented at Skoch Summit-Challengers 2003, held at New Delhi on March 26. The report covers all IT market segments from hardware and software to networking. Here are some important findings of Skoch’s analysis

Skoch predicts good times ahead
Skoch Summit 2003, Skoch’s annual IT industry conference coincided with the Skoch Challengers 2003 Awards. Sixth in the series, the Summit has assumed special importance in view of the persisting uncertainties concerning the slump in the IT industry, trade barriers in export territories, the Digital Divide and international hostilities.

Challengers rely on innovation and technology
In an industry littered with awards that focus only on revenues, Skoch recently presented the Challengers 2003 Awards which bring a unique positioning to the Indian IT industry. The Challengers Awards are based on the following criteria:

HP’s retail march
Innovative companies are always known to create their own markets rather than wait for the buyer to come to them.

Increased IT penetration is imperative
After their success in the IT software exports marketplace, Indian IT companies have to join hands with local players, including users, to increase IT penetration, says S Ramakrishnan

64-bit, the new mantra for AMD
The year 2003 will mark another victory for the world’s second largest microprocessor maker, AMD.

Daksh: Scaling up the value chain
At a time when the Indian ITES industry is moving towards consolidation and evolving beyond the cost advantage syndrome, it is the innovative players who will survive.

PCs and laser printers to drive Samsung’s growth
Laser printers - Though still the dominant force in the Indian laser printer market, HP’s dominion is gradually getting segregated among other players with competition on the rise. Personal Computers - In a market already dominated by assemblers on one hand and well established players like HP, HCL, IBM and Zenith on the other, and at a time when the market was experiencing an all-time low, Samsung’s entry into the Indian PC market was bound to raise a few eyebrows.

SCO: Driven by customers
At 2,282 units in 2002, the SCO Group has bagged a 5 percent share of the total server market in India, pegged at 45,640 units. Skoch also believes that the SCO Group is well positioned to double its market share in three years or earlier.

Enterasys: Networking first
After learning tough lessons in a volatile market, Enterasys has put in place a fully restructured business plan and a dynamic business team to drive it.

Canon plays challenger
‘Boom time ahead’ could be the perfect phrase for Canon India, if one has to go by the performance of the company in the last year.

Oracle India aims high at enterprise apps space
The past few years have seen a lot of volatility in the database management industry, with each player trying to bring in some extra edge in its offering to the customer.
