India
along with China has been one of the fastest growing markets
for PCs in India. While PC sales in India are still not booming,
they are way ahead of other markets. Attracted by the growth
rates in the Indian PC market, memory major Micron has decided
to set up a direct presence in India by establishing a sales
office in Bangalore. Additionally, the company has also tied
up with Celetron India as its sole national distributor.
Said Phillip Martin, director, international corporate affairs,
Micron, We have been keenly analysing the Indian market
and current trends point out to a strong demand for memory.
We believe that it is the right time to enter the Indian market
and capitalise on the opportunities we have on hand.
In addition to the fact that memory components can be directly
sourced from India rather than Singapore as was the case earlier,
the direct presence is also meant to tap the growing number
of companies doing product design in India. While the focus
of the company will start from PCs, going further, the company
would look at extending its product portfolio across various
devices in consumer electronics like digital cameras, PDAs,
cellular phones and conditional access systems.
Further, the tie-up with Celetron gives the company the initial
market it needs to tap into. For instance, Celetron is a known
player in the electronic manufacturing service space and has
forged close relationships with many manufacturers. This gives
Micron a ready market to tap. Accordingly, the company will
initially concentrate on OEM sales and then look at diversifying
as the market expands. As a distributor, Celetron would be
responsible for not only importing and distributing memory
components but also for providing post-sales support in the
country. Celetron would also be responsible for manufacturing
as per the design specifications given by Micron. Additionally,
Celetron would provide customised Micron chips to local manufacturers.
