Vantel brings new approach to network security for banks

Circuit EC / Hyderabad

Hyderabad-based Vantel Technologies India is all set to resell the location-based network security solution of CyberLocator in the Indian market. The solution can be useful for banks that need to provide enhanced security for applications like e-banking operations. CyberLocator’s solution is a new approach to authentication that utilises space geodetic methods to form a time-dependent location signature that is virtually impossible to forge.

CyberLocator uses the US government’s Global Positioning System (GPS) to authenticate the physical location of any networked device. Its main product Location Secure is a service that restricts network access to authorised users who gain entry only from pre-authorised locations.

Vantel plans to offer Location Secure to customers whose network security might benefit from a network access control mechanism featuring constantly varying location signatures. CyberLocator’s time and location signatures can generate a one-time security password that could be a helpful addition to network protection toolkits.

Traditional methods that control access to a computer network involve something one has or something one knows. “Passwords, smart cards, and even biometrics are subject to theft, misuse or penetration. With Location Secure in place, network access is denied unless the user logs in with the proper credentials from proper location,” says Dr Kenn Gold, CyberLocator’s chief scientist.

JVR Prabhu, Vantel’s president, says, “This method can be used to control access to sensitive systems, transactions or information. It would serve as a strong deterrent to potential intruders who hide behind the anonymity afforded by their remote locations and fraudulent use of conventional authentication methods.”

In critical environments that could include military command and control telephone switching, air traffic control or banking, this extra assurance can be extremely important in order to avoid a potential catastrophe. High-risk, high-value networks would benefit the most by Location Secure.
