Ittiam bets big on voice apps

Circuit EC/Bangalore

Bangalore-based Ittiam Systems is betting big on the low-bit rate CODEC (for encoding and decoding) space for speech applications. Having identified this area as a key focus segment, Ittiam has put together a low bit rate (2 KBITS per sec) and high-bit rate (8-32 KBITS per second) CODECs for speech and high end VoIP applications respectively.

The company is now also looking at expanding its market focus for its products to South Korea and Greater China besides its ongoing thrust on the US, Japanese and European markets.

Rajam says the low-bit rate speech CODEC enables significantly higher levels of storage and bandwidth

According to Srini Rajam, chairman and CEO, Ittiam, the low-bit rate speech CODEC developed by the company can enable significantly higher levels of storage and bandwidth. “Normally, speech CODECs need 8-32 KBITS per second, but out of 2 KBITS per sec CODEC can enable the storage of one hour of digital speech for every MB of memory on the system it is used in. Also in terms of transmission, it is enabled to work on the GPRS network and can support a unique application for voice messaging on the network,” he added. Ittiam has already developed a number of high-bit rate CODECs for the audio segment and video segment, he said.

“Going forward, we will build a mixed portfolio for both limited frequency and high-end applications. Our focus is on two key business areas multimedia (audio/video) and communication (wireless and wireline),” Rajam said.
