Alopa unveils triple focus for 2002

Akhtar Pasha/Bangalore

Bangalore-based Alopa Networks, a solution provider for integrated broadband subscribers and operational support systems (OSS) applications, plans to focus on new emerging markets voice, video and data over cable, and the entertainment market. Vijaya Verma, managing director, Alopa Networks India, says, “This year, the company will have a triple focus enabling data, voice and video services over Cable and Fixed Wireless networks. We will also look at provisioning gaming platforms, and enabling content provisioning in the entertainment market.” Formerly, offering high-speed data services in the cable and fixed wireless markets, had been a focus area for the company.

Verma says the focus areas will go a long way in helping the company secure a foothold in new geographies

Verma adds, “We have domain expertise in Packet Cable (Telephony over Cable) through our presence in CableLabs. Our provisioning servers are used in the baseline network of CableLabs, for certifying Media Termination Adaptors from hardware vendors such as RCA Thomson, TI and Broadcom.” The company has an OEM tie-up with these vendors for joint deployment. Its strategy will be to partner with vendors such as Tellabs, for implementing telephony over switched access.

In the video domain, the company is working with leading set-top box vendors including Motorola and Scientific Atlanta to enable set-top box provisioning with its software. For gaming software, Alopa is currently in talks with key vendors, but Verma refused to divulge details.

Armed with these new offerings, the company plans to expand into Europe, South America and Asia Pacific specifically China, Japan and Korea this year. Says Verma, “We are expecting healthy growth in these markets. By the end of this year, these markets will generate significant revenues.”

Alopa’s India development centre will play a key role in developing new products. Over 75 percent of the company’s engineering team is located here and much of the product architecture and design is done from India, as well as most of the development and testing.
