Express Computer Editor gets IT Journalist Award

The Madhu Valluri Memorial IT Journalist Award for 2002 was presented to Express Computer editor Valentine de Souza (Val Souza), at a function in Mumbai recently.

Val Souza has been at the helm of computer magazine publishing in India for the last twelve years and has launched three magazines and two websites for the computer industry and computer users during this period. He is the founding editor of

Express Computer. He was chosen for the award after an elaborate selection process that sought nominations via e-mail, website polls, feedback from IT industry CEOs, and final selection by a panel of judges comprising Ashank Desai, chairman and managing director, Mastek; Pradeep Kar, chairman and founder, Microland Group; and Ashok Advani, publisher, The Business India Group.

The Foundation also presented a “Vijeta” award to 16-year-old cancer survivor Abhiram Jha, who has been battling bone cancer for the last ten years.

The Madhu Valluri Memorial Foundation (MVMF) was set up in memory of pioneering IT journalist Madhu Valluri, who succumbed to leukaemia in 1994, at the age of 38. Valluri launched India’s first software magazine, Software Review. The MVM Foundation’s mission is to help the common man understand information technology by instituting educational scholarships and awards, holding seminars, and donating PCs to schools and colleges. The Foundation wishes to use IT to make a difference to millions of lives, serve as a platform to award excellence in IT journalism, and also help cancer victims in every way possible.

The Foundation is seeking donors to enable it to institute a greater number of IT scholarships and awards to promote excellence in IT journalism, organise seminars and lectures, as well as contribute more towards cancer patient rehabilitation.

Those interested in helping out may contact the Foundation via e-mail at madhuvallurifoundation@rediffmail.com.
