Vivekanand
says HiCommand helps administrators manage their
storage resources better |
With
IDC predicting a phenomenal growth in the market for enterprise
data management, the sector has suddenly become the most sought
after, with companies such as Hitachi Data Systems (HDS),
Veritas and Sun Microsystems jumping on the bandwagon. Though
a relatively late entrant, HDS has already tasted blood with
HiCommand, an open storage management framework software,
which currently accounts for 20 percent of the companys
total revenue stream. This solution, which promises to increase
productivity of storage systems by 15 to 20 times, comes as
a welcome relief to storage system administrators under pressure
to cut costs and increase revenues. Explains V Vivekanand,
business development manager, HDS, Currently, hardware
accounts for 40 percent of the cost of deploying an entire
storage system. The rest of the cost is on software. Once
this software works, it will commoditise hardware, which will
then account for only 20 percent of the entire cost. At that
point youll have one pool of storage, and you can go
to any vendor.
HiCommand provides a single integrated interface point for
controlling the Hitachi Freedom Storage systems. The solution
helps administrators manage their storage resources better
within a storage network through means of mapping, data allocation,
and up-to-date information on storage capacity and usage.
Elucidates Vivekanand, Once you have deployed your storage
system you would like to monitor it. HiCommand will deploy
a metering tool that will tell you the amount of storage space
being used by each department.
